Writing Good Debates
How to Write a Debate Question That Gets Real Answers
The question decides the quality of the debate. A vague or loaded question gets shouting. A clear one gets thinking.
Ask one thing at a time
"Should schools ban phones and homework?" is two debates wearing one coat. Split it, and each side knows what it is defending.
Make it answerable with Yes or No
If the answer needs a paragraph before anyone can pick a side, rewrite it. "Should the voting age be lowered to 16?" works. "What do you think about voting?" does not.
Keep the wording neutral
Why is it obvious that remote work is better?
That question has already picked a winner. Try "Is remote work better for most teams?" and let people argue it out.
A quick checklist
- One question, one topic.
- Clear Yes or No answers.
- No hidden opinion in the wording.
- Something real people could disagree about in good faith.
